I..............................
weitere Namen
auch: Northern Spie, Northern Pie Apple (http://en.wikipedia.org)
Red Spy, Red Northern Spy (www.vintagevirginiaapples.com)
Späher des Nordens (http://ogv-wiesenthalerhof.de)
I..............................
Herkunft:
discovered around 1800 in East Bloomfield, New York, south of Rochester, New York  (http://en.wikipedia.org)
The exact origin of the cultivar is somewhat obscure. (www.pubhort.org)
I..............................
Frucht:
A large, handsome apple: the yellow background color is almost totally covered in bright red oversplashed and striped with darker carmine red. The skin has a light bloom. An excellent flavored, slightly yellowish fleshed, very crisp and juicy, apple. (www.naturalhub.com)
It contains 13.77% sugar that ferments to 6+% alcohol. (www.vintagevirginiaapples.com)
Northern Spy has the most antioxidents of any variety of apple (http://adamapples.blogspot.com)
The flesh is yellow, juicy, and coarse. The bite is a little tender but still crisp. (http://adamapples.blogspot.com)
When grown in warmer areas it lacks the crispness and flavor of fruit grown in cooler regions. (www.bighorsecreekfarm.com)
I..............................
Verwendung:
good dessert and pie apple that is also used for juice and cider (http://en.wikipedia.org)
N.S. is also a very good culinary apple. (www.naturalhub.com)
I..............................
Reifezeit:

Fruits from Northern Spy ripen aproxemately 150-160 days after full bloom. (Apples)
Late season. (www.naturalhub.com)
I..............................
Lagerung:
stores well (www.orangepippin.com)

Anfälligkeiten:
lack of disease resistance  (http://en.wikipedia.org)
During rainy weather, the fruit may crack, and because of the delicate skin, it is easily damaged during harvest. (www.vintagevirginiaapples.com)
Disadvantages of Northern Spy are its extreme lack of precocity and its vigorous growth and biannual-bearing tendency (Apples)
I..............................
Blüte, Befruchtung:
Northern Spy blooms late in the season and will pollinate all other late-blooming varieties, it will also pollinate varieties blooming in the middle of the season. (www.acnursery.com)
diploid.
Durch perikline Teilung kommen aber auch tetraploide Mutationen vor : (A) sport (of the Northern Spy apple) was found to be a periclinal chimera, in which the periclines had the diploid and tetraploid chromosome number. (http://jhered.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/pdf_extract/38/12/371)
(…) a large fruited Northern Spy ... had a diploid layer of cells covering the inner, tetraploid tissue (A Chromosomal Chimera of the Northern Spy Apple) (jhered.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/37/9/265.pdf)
I..............................
Ertrag:
slow to come into bearing, taking 3 to 4 years on a dwarfing roostock  (www.naturalhub.com)
On standard rootstock, 10 years may expire before the first harvest (www.vintagevirginiaapples.com)
I..............................
Standort:
I..............................
Wuchs:
The hardy tree has an upright free-growing habit with long curved branches and dense foliage. (www.vintagevirginiaapples.com)
I..............................
Schnitt:
I..............................
Veredelung:
the native Spy root makes an excellent stock for grafting other varieties to a standard size tree (http://en.wikipedia.org)
Northern Spy is known for taking as much as a decade to bear fruit unless grafted to a non-standard rootstock  (http://en.wikipedia.org)
Developed as a rootstock in New Zealand and Australia pre-1930s because of woolly aphid resistance. Not quite as precocious as MM.106  (www.dpi.nsw.gov.au)
Die MM-Unterlagen entstanden durch Kreuzung zwischen M-Typen und „Northern Spy“ aus Merton – Malling-Merton. Beide Orte sind obstbauliche Versuchsstationen in England. (http://admin.kleingarten-bund.de)

Überraschender Weise habe ich fast nur englischsprachige Texte im Internet gefunden.
